COEP alumni sponsor "Techno-Craft booth" competition at COEP every year. Ten teams with about 20 students and 10 alumni each will build a booth/model based on a central theme. We are eager to work with enthusiastic students who like to work with tools.

Concept of a Techno-Craft Booth:
Students will build some working gadgets themselves based on a central theme. COEP students to apply their technical knowledge on real life things on a small scale. This will be done in a form of a competition and a team of students will build one booth based on a central theme. This year's theme is “iConserve - for a better tomorrow”  Discussions about the theme are going on in a forum. Alumni award a BIG trophy.
Names of proud alumni sponsors will be displayed at their respective booths.

General guidelines in forming a booth.
Twenty students (from all four years: in 4-6-6-4 ratio) and ten alumni in each team. Each booth/team has a forum on
www.aarewah.com. Log on, click on 'Forum' on left side and reply to a forum of the booth of your choice to participate. Total of 100 alumni and 200 students participate and communicate. Students and alumni will stay in touch through the design and building process.

1. Students can purchase what they need for booth construction. Take receipts to COEP alumni association office. Alumni association will issue cash for the receipt amount. (Up to Rs. 10,000/- only per booth) to the student coordinators. 2. Alumni association will issue a cash advance for a few thousand Rs. if the students fill a voucher in the alumni office. Students are required to give the receipts for the purchases to Alumni association later.

Panel of judges: COEP Alumni association in Pune will assemble a panel of judges for this competition. The panel will include alumni with expertise in various engineering fields.

Judging criteria: Booths/models will be judged on: 1. Technical content, 2. Craftsmanship, 3. Cost effectiveness, 4. Originality of construction work, 5. Practical utility of the model, 6. Connection to the central theme (iConserve - for a better tomorrow), 7. Written report, and, 8.Team effort

Role of the alumni

This time, the students initially did not know the nature of competition and also did not decide the project in the 1st term of 2007-08. Hence, actually projects began in Jan, 08. Hence, they did not convert their ideas into models with fineness. Few groups like E&TC and Instrumentation backed out at the last moment. Hence, less expenditure was incurred for this technical event.
As most of the students participated belong to S.Y. and T.Y.B.Tech classes. They can participate in the event next time with more enthusiasm and clear knowledge of what is to be done.
In general, it was successful and satisfying experience to all and many students visited the booths on 14 & 15th March, 08 enthusiastically. I hope, next time there will be more number of entries for this interesting event.

Suggestions for future:

1. The activity can be made more structured and disciplined
2. The students will be informed in July, 2008, so that they will start preparing for the ideas converted into models
3. The theme of next event, namely; “Shaping Imaginations” has already been announced on Gymkhana Day when most the students attended the function.
4. The names on the students in each group will be finalized in the initial stage. Frequent changes in the names working in the group should not be allowed..
5. More time thus can be available for preparing the working models.
6. The help of local alumni who are entrepreneurs can be made available, so that, they can provide guidance and mfg facility.
7. One dept faculty should be allotted to keep follow up, give guidance and administer the requirements of the group in the dept.
8. Phase wise schedule could be prepared and displayed for the benefit of all groups
9. The last date of completing the project and exhibition day can be decided from the academic calendar of the college.
10. Rules & regulations of the competition should be displayed to the students in the 1st terms only.

Your suggestions are welcome. We will make the event more meaningful & attractive with your support.
Regards, Prof. Mandke, Executive Director
